Tango No. 9, San Francisco’s premier chamber ensemble devoted to all facets of tango music, celebrates two reunions: a return to one of their favorite venues and the return of a beloved colleague.
The band has played the petite Red Poppy Art House several times, and every single appearance has been magical. The storefront — closer to a living room than a music venue — allows the band an intimate connection with its audience that is impossible in more formal settings. The repertoire leans — of necessity — more toward the listener than the dancer, while the playing is riskier and the humor more freewheeling. We are expecting yet another enchanted evening.
Making this show even more special will be the return of Tango No. 9′s longtime accordionist, Isabel Douglass. After appearing on the last three of the band’s four recordings, Douglass relocated to Copenhagen to continue her instrumental and musicological studies (and to be closer to her new husband!), but tango has never strayed far from her heart.
The show will also include Tango No. 9′s trademark mix of traditional dance music, the tango nuevo of Astor Piazzolla, and more recent compositions that extend tango conventions into the 21st century.
Tango No. 9 is:
Catharine Clune – violin
Greg Stephens – trombone
Joshua Raoul Brody – piano
Zoltan diBartolo – vocal
special guest Isabel Douglass – accordion
