Tango No. 9, San Francisco’s premier chamber ensemble devoted to all facets of tango music, is delighted to help welcome back former Bay Area composer, new music champion, and flugelhorn virtuoso Dmitri Matheny.

Since he relocated to Arizona in 2009, Matheny has been sorely missed. In town for a few performances with his own Dmitri Matheny Group, he has graciously agreed to sit in with Tango No. 9. The band has been a fan of Matheny’s composition since Greg Stephens added his arrangement of “Sea of Tranquility” to the Tango No. 9 repertoire, but this is the first time they’ve had a chance to perform together. The mellow sound of the flugelhorn dovetails perfectly with Stephens’ trombone, while Matheny’s imposing jazz chops take the sound of the group into yet another direction.

The show will also include Tango No. 9′s trademark mix of traditional dance music, the tango nuevo of Astor Piazzolla, and more recent compositions that extend tango conventions into the 21st century.

Tango No. 9 is:
Catharine Clune – violin
Greg Stephens – trombone
Joshua Raoul Brody – piano
Zoltan diBartolo – vocal
special guest Dmitri Matheny – flugelhorn
